The Terrible Teens - Dealing with Autistic Teenagers

For the majority of the parents, the toughest time is during the teenage years of their children. When the teenage years start, several changes occur in their bodies and minds, and parents virtually have negligible control in many of the situations.

The same applies to an autistic child. Although your autistic child may not experience the puberty the same way like the normal teenagers, but the major hormonal changes occur in his body as well. This can be either good or bad depending upon the reaction of your autistic child to the changes in hormone levels.

One of the most frightening side effects of changes in autistic teen hormone levels is the start of seizures. Many of the autistic people go through seizures from their birth till old age. Even though your child may not suffer from seizures the same way, but he or she may start to have these at teenage and afterwards owing to new hormone levels in the body. Surprisingly, the violent shaking seizures may not be a bad thing. Almost 25% of autistic children suffer from seizures, but many of these remain unnoticed, as these seizure are different than those of explained in text books. If you identify the occurrence of seizure in your child, you must consult the doctors and they will be able to treat it effectively. On the other hand, you and your child may not be able to recognize, if seizures occur subconsciously. The outcome of these subconscious seizures will be very distressing in terms of the loss of body functions, especially when the child was showing an improvement before the start of teenage. In that case, the regular check ups with he physician are imperative during puberty. Autistic Teens
The changes occurred may not always be a bad thing. The changes in Hormone levels may help in the growth of your autistic child, especially in those spheres where he or she had no ability or interest. Many of the parents told that the behavior of their autistic child has improved and their understanding of society has picked up too.

It is vital that you observe the changes in your child very vigilantly in puberty and also seek as much information as possible from your physician. Actually, the start of teenage is a complicated happening for any child and it is even worse for an autistic child. You must have patience and sympathetic behavior in dealing with your teen. You must be very cautious to control his or her autism, so that the evolution from child to adult will be without trouble.
